Will Power earned a precious IZOD IndyCar Series championship point yesterday by claiming his eighth pole position of the season for today’s Kentucky Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway. The Team Penske pilot now holds a 12-point lead over Dario Franchitti going into today’s race after throwing up a two-lap Kentucky qualifying record of 219.283 m.p.h. on Saturday evening.
Earning the outside front-row position was Graham Rahal, who posted a two-lap run at 218.348 m.p.h. Row 2 features Rookie of the Year combatant James Hinchcliffe on the inside and perennial oval contender Ed Carpenter on the outside, while the third row is made up of the other ROY contender, J.R. Hildebrand, and Marco Andretti.
But what of Power’s main title rival Franchitti? The Scotsman will have to start 11th on the grid, on the inside of Row 6.
