Sarah Fisher set to announce 2012 driver tomorrow

Could the “Racer of Tomorrow” make his public debut as an IZOD IndyCar Series driver…tomorrow?

Tennessee’s Josef Newgarden, the reigning Firestone Indy Lights champion and holder of the Twitter handle @raceroftomorrow, has been linked to Sarah Fisher Racing in recent times and, in advance of her team’s 2012 driver announcement tomorrow at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Fisher wouldn’t confirm or deny to SPEEDTV.com that Newgarden would be her replacement for newly minted driver/owner Ed Carpenter.

Newgarden has been hailed as one of America’s top open-wheel prospects and in 2011, he showed that he was ready to take his shot at the big time. In 14 FIL starts last year with Sam Schmidt Motorsports, he racked up five wins and 10 top-5 finishes en route to the championship, which he clinched in the next-to-last event of the season.

Whether it’s Newgarden or another driver, the fact that SFR is going ahead with an announcement is a good sign for their 2012 program after a momentary burst of doubt upon the announcement that Dollar General wouldn’t be back with them in 2012.

But two big questions still remain. In regards to sponsorship, can Fisher find a sole primary backer to replace DG or will she have to use multiple sponsors in order to piece together the season? Also, which engine brand will have her on board with them for 2012?

We’re hearing that IndianapolisMotorSpeedway.com will be carrying a stream of the SFR announcement tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET.
