Charlie Kimball crashes in Bump Day practice

American cleared to drive, but may have to start from back of Indy 500 field

Will Charlie Kimball have to relinquish his 14th-place starting position for next Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 (11 a.m. ET, ABC)?

He may have to after his primary No. 83 Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing Honda hit the wall in the short chute between Turns 1 and 2 earlier this afternoon during a practice session at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. If the CGR team elects to bring out the 83T backup car for him, Kimball must start from the rear of the field for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.

In an incident that bore similarities to Ed Carpenter’s wreck on Saturday (which forced him to qualify today with his own T car), Kimball spun coming out of Turn 1 and slammed the SAFER Barrier. After impacting on the left side, Kimball’s right wheels came off the ground momentarily before returning to the track surface.

Once the car came to a stop, Kimball got out of the car under his own power. He later tweeted on his @racewithinsulin account: “I’m ok. 100% fine. I feel really badly for the @CGRTeams guys.”

Kimball has been cleared to drive again.
