Pole Day: Clauson, Servia cleared to drive after qualifying crashes

A promising qualifying run for Indianapolis 500 rookie Bryan Clauson went sour in a hurry when he lost control of his No. 39 Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing Honda in Turn 1 and hit the SAFER Barrier.

As he drove through the turn, the car bobbled on the two-time defending USAC champion and then spun into the SAFER, causing major damage to its left side and rear end. Clauson had put together a strong average of 223.7 mph over the first three laps of his four-lap run before the incident.

The Indiana driver was checked and released from the infield care center, and is cleared to drive.

Clauson’s car owner, Sarah Fisher, told IMS Radio that they had a backup car that was “not together,” but later tweeted that the car was “undergoing repair,” which leads to the belief that the primary car will eventually be back out to put Clauson in the show.

Another driver has had trouble with the walls of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway today. On the warmup lap of his first qualifying run, Panther/DRR pilot Oriol Servia spun coming out of Turn 4 and then hit both the inside wall at the pit road entrance and the pit attenuator.

Servia has also been checked, released and cleared to drive. It was confirmed on Twitter by ESPN pit reporter Jamie Little that Servia’s machine would be repairable as well, with no need to go to a backup car.
