No. 14 team fined $15,000, loses 10 entrant points
The good vibes surrounding A.J. Foyt Racing and driver Mike Conway’s third-place finish last Sunday in Toronto were dampened today, as INDYCAR announced that Conway’s No. 14 machine ran afoul of the INDYCAR rule book in post-race tech inspection.
The Englishman’s car was found to have violated Rule 14.7.2 of the IZOD IndyCar Series rules, which states that all fuel cells must have a maximum capacity of 18.5 gallons. As a result, the No. 14 team has been fined $15,000 and docked 10 entrant points.
According to INDYCAR vice president of technology Will Phillips, the sanctioning body felt that Conway’s fuel cell potentially could have given him a “track position advantage” in Toronto. A.J. Foyt Racing can appeal the ruling.
Prior to Sunday, Conway hadn’t hit the podium since winning at Long Beach last season for Andretti Autosport.
