Last year’s IZOD IndyCar Series race at Texas Motor Speedway was shockingly bad considering the many close finishes that have occurred there. Instead of the side-by-side action that fans and media were used to, we got a largely processional affair that was won by Helio Castroneves. Drivers acknowledged the boring racing and clamored for more ways to open up the rule book, which eventually came in the form of the ‘new’ speedway aerodynamic package.
This year, the package is on for the series’ return to Fort Worth. It’ll be worth watching to see if it can help drivers be able to pass better and fans need to see that, too. What happened last year at Texas was something that seemed, if not unthinkable, then something close to it. I’m not sure if IndyCar can afford a second bad race in a row at the track that’s been called their ‘second home.’
