Will Power leads Friday practice at St. Pete

Team Penske’s Will Power got his Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg (Fla.) weekend off on the right track by taking the top spot in today’s IZOD IndyCar Series practice sessions at the 1.8-mile temporary street circuit.

Power, the current series points leader after his season-opening victory two weeks ago in Brazil, threw down a hot lap of 62.3200 seconds (103.979 m.p.h.) in the No. 12 Verizon machine. He managed to beat Target Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon (63.0299 seconds), Dreyer and Reinbold Racing’s Justin Wilson (63.0576 seconds), and Tony Kanaan (63.0615 seconds) and Ryan Hunter-Reay (63.0763 seconds) of Andretti Autosport.

KV Racing Technology’s E.J. Viso and Takuma Sato, AA’s Marco Andretti, Penske’s Helio Castroneves, and Sarah Fisher Racing’s Graham Rahal rounded out the top ten in the combined practices. Tomorrow’s IZOD IndyCar Series schedule features a one-hour practice session starting at 9:55 a.m. ET and then three rounds of knockout qualifying at 1:20 p.m. ET to determine the grid for Sunday’s main event (3:30 p.m. ET on ABC).
