4:52 p.m. — Bubble boy Saavedra crashes

Sebastian Saavedra is now a sitting duck to be bumped off after a practice crash just minutes ago. The 19-year-old Colombian lost control of the No. 29 Bryan Herta Autosport entry in Turn 1 and backed into the SAFER Barrier, causing major rear-end damage.

The machine is the only car that Saavedra has, which means he will not be able to fight back if he is bumped from the field in the final hour of qualifications today at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He is currently on the bubble with a four-lap average of 223.634 m.p.h.

The impact of Saavedra’s wreck appeared to necessitate repairs to the SAFER — which could have proven to be a major problem for Tony Kanaan and other drivers as they try to get into the show in the next 60 minutes. But it was found that no repairs were needed and that we’ll be back to green very shortly.
