Aaaaaaaand we’re back!
Apologies for not posting that much during the last week, but I had to re-charge for a bit. I also went on a weekend trip to Boston to visit some friends — and I was unable to use my host’s wireless connection. I was in no mood to go back and forth to Panera Bread for Internet access (I love Panera, but not that much), so the HP had a nice few days of rest in my backpack.
But now, we’re heading for Sunday’s Iowa Corn Indy 250 at the Iowa Speedway (1:30 p.m. ET, Versus) and after that, we’re killing off the rest of the summer on road and street circuits; the next oval race isn’t until Aug. 28 at Chicagoland Speedway. I’m sure that makes the hearts of oval racing fans all twitterpated. Not.
But this next bit of news should make everybody happy: Engine manufacturer Cosworth — which is co-owned by KV Racing Technology partner Kevin Kalkhoven — could be making a return to American open-wheel racing.
Specifically mentioning the IZOD IndyCar Series as a potential series to race in, the manufacturer’s general manager Mark Gallagher told Dean McNulty of the Toronto Sun that they’re hoping to build race engines for ‘a number of North American racing series within the next year.’ Right now, Cosworth powers a number of squads across the pond in Formula One, but the company hasn’t been seen in American open-wheel racing since unification in 2008 brought the end of Champ Car.
It’s also been five seasons since the Indy Racing League has had the Cozzies, who had a three-year run from 2003 to 2005 and were badged as Chevrolets.
For fans that would like to see more engine variety in the sport’s future, this is a potentially big development. Click here to see the Sun piece and to hear more comments from Gallagher on his company’s racing aspirations.
