Milka Duno has struck again.
Long berated as the IZOD IndyCar Series’ own moving chicane, the driver of the No. 19 CITGO-backed Dale Coyne Racing entry apparently held up Ryan Hunter-Reay as he was trying to put down a flyer during the first round of today’s qualifying for the Camping World Grand Prix at the Glen (Sun., 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC). Hunter-Reay, the 2008 winner at the Glen, will have to start 16th after being unable to advance out of his group.
After the session, Hunter-Reay then went down to Duno’s pitbox and had a brief confrontation (which you can see above). While RHR kept it clean, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out he was still plenty mad. An IMS Radio reporter caught up with the American driver afterwards and when asked about the conversation he’d just had with Duno, Hunter-Reay said (among other things) that “there’s no need to have somebody that slow in the series.”
For the record, Duno’s qualifying time (100.4911 seconds) is over 11 seconds off the pace set by pole-sitter Will Power (89.3164). Even worse, all but two of the Firestone Indy Lights pilots set faster times than Duno in their own qualifying session. Considering that the FIL drivers have 420 horsepower to play with — as opposed to the 650 hp in Honda’s IndyCar engines — this is just embarrassing.
