A hard crash in Turn 1 for KV Racing Technology driver E.J. Viso has brought Day 4 of Indianapolis 500 practice to a conclusion.
With roughly ten minutes remaining in the session, Viso’s No. 8 PDVSA-backed machine spun in Turn 1 and slammed hard into the SAFER Barrier, rear-end first. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway video feed showed Viso on a stretcher and then loaded into an ambulance in what was hopefully just a precautionary procedure.
Scott Dixon led today’s practice session with a lap at 226.549 m.p.h. in the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car. He was followed by one of Viso’s teammates at KVRT, Mario Moraes, who had the second-quickest lap at 225.913 m.p.h. in the No. 32 entry. Marco Andretti (225.751), Alex Tagliani (225.394), and Dan Wheldon (225.378) rounded out the top five on the charts.
UPDATE (6:20 p.m. ET): The IZOD IndyCar Series has passed on word that Viso is awake and alert and is being transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. According to the series, he is complaining of back pain.
16thandGeorgetown.com is at the track today and the blog has tweeted a pic of Viso’s wrecked car.
UPDATE (8:35 p.m. ET): Versus pit reporter Lindy Thackston has tweeted along a pic from ‘Harvalde1‘ of Viso recuperating at the hospital. According to the picture caption, doctors found that Viso suffered no fractures as a result of his wreck earlier today.
