Helio Castroneves will aim to defend his Indianapolis 500 title from the pole next Sunday.
The three-time ‘500’ champ grabbed the top spot today at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, throwing down a four-lap average at 227.970 m.p.h. in the “Fast Nine” shootout to walk away with $175,000 and 15 IZOD IndyCar Series championship points. It’s Castroneves’ fourth pole at the Brickyard and in one week, he’ll look to grab his fourth victory at IMS as well.
He’ll be joined on the front row by teammate Will Power, who earned the second starting position with an average speed of 227.578 m.p.h. in the No. 12 Team Penske car, and Target Chip Ganassi Racing’s Dario Franchitti, who will go from P3 after putting up a 226.990 m.p.h. four-lap average.
