Rumor: Is it time to dust off the Bowties?

Report has Chevy back to IndyCar in 2012, but CEO dubs it “pure speculation”

General Motors has been out of the IZOD IndyCar Series since the 2005 season, when the “Chevworth” engine — a Chevrolet-badged powerplant designed by Cosworth — ran its final laps. But one report may be heralding the Bowtie’s return to the open-wheel wars in 2012.

Peter DeLorenzo of AutoExtremist.com has written that GM will make a comeback in 2012 and face off against Honda with a twin-turbo V6 engine. According to DeLorenzo, the announcement will be made on Friday.

But in a piece by SPEED Channel’s Marshall Pruett, IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard called the rumor “pure speculation” and that while the series is courting multiple manufacturers for the 2012 chassis/engine packages, only Honda has signed up as of now.

UPDATE: Pruett has confirmed that GM Racing will hold a press conference on Friday but that the contents are “TBD.” The speculation continues…
