Rain continues to fall in St. Petersburg, Florida as the IZOD IndyCar Series tries to get the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in today. As of now, the league is aiming for a 4:30 p.m. ET start time, but I’m getting the sense that’s pretty optimistic on their part.
In the meantime, some drivers aren’t too sure about if and when they’ll be able to race. Andretti Autosport’s Tony Kanaan is pessimistic about getting the race started, while Team Penske’s Ryan Briscoe is expecting the track will be wet all day.
ABC has just gone to air with their TV coverage from St. Petersburg, and the cameras are revealing major puddles on the course and a steady downpour…This race seems destined to go to Monday afternoon, but we’ll see.
UPDATE (3:35 p.m. ET): Curt Cavin of The Indianapolis Star, as well as the IRL, is reporting that an announcement on today’s event will be made at 4 p.m. ET. Cavin also says that a press conference is planned for 4:30 p.m. ET, so it’s looking more and more like this race isn’t happening today.
