Graham Rahal has a ride for 2010…sort of.
Curt Cavin of The Indianapolis Star is reporting that the prized free agent driver will race two early-season events while continuing to try and nail down a full campaign. But who he’ll race for is a bit of a surprise — Sarah Fisher Racing. Rahal will drive a Dollar General-backed entry for SFR at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 28 (ABC-TV) and the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park on April 11 (Versus).
An interesting alliance for sure, and it could really pay off big for Fisher’s team as it attempts a mix of ovals and road/street courses this season. Fisher is scheduled for nine races and former Firestone Indy Lights champion Jay Howard will join SFR for five. I see Rahal lending a good bit of knowledge to the team on attacking road and street courses. He’s also won at St. Petersburg before, so this may put SFR as a dark horse contender for that event.
But does this mean that Rahal will take Fisher’s place at St. Petersburg and Barber? Those two events were on her schedule, as well as all of the ovals save for Twin Ring Motegi in Japan. Cavin didn’t explicitly mention that Rahal would take over Fisher’s No. 67 machine, but her “Dollar General-sponsored car.” I’m betting that Rahal will indeed drive the No. 67, though.
