Report: Lotus is third engine manufacturer for IndyCar 2012

After revealing plans this past summer to create an aero kit for the next generation of IndyCars, Lotus is set to announce that they’ll also become the IZOD IndyCar Series’ third engine manufacturer in 2012.

A report by Curt Cavin of The Indianapolis Star says that confirmation will be made tomorrow at 5 p.m. ET from the Los Angeles Auto Show. IndyCar.com will stream the press conference at that time.

Robin Miller of SPEED Channel is also reporting that Lotus will “most likely” have their engines built by Cosworth, which is co-owned by KV Racing Technology team co-owner Kevin Kalkhoven. Miller writes that Lotus just barely declared their intentions before last night’s deadline.

Last year, Lotus became a technical and sponsorship partner with KVRT. The legendary British carmaker holds a cherished place in Indianapolis 500 history with its 1965 victory by driver Jim Clark — his Lotus 38 machine was the first mid-engine car to win the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
