Report: Quebec City is on IRL’s radar

Discussions about a third Canadian race for the IZOD IndyCar Series has always seemed to center around Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, the traditional home of the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix (and, more recently, the NASCAR Nationwide Series). But it appears that the IRL is starting to focus on Quebec City as a possible stop in 2011.

According to Auto123.com’s Luc Fradette, former IRL vice president of competition Tony Cotman and series representatives were in the capital of Quebec yesterday to, in the writer’s words, “evaluate the possibility of holding an event in the city in 2011.” From the looks of the article, the key element in this bid is FAZZT Race Team co-owner and Montreal entrepreneur Andre Azzi, as he’s called the event promoter and is quoted a bit about trying to find a proper course in the midst of the narrow Quebec City streets. Interesting to see this region pop up after years of hearing about Montreal possibly hitting the IndyCar schedule. The league also has several options outside of Montreal and Quebec City. As you may recall, Champ Car put on an entertaining show at the Mont-Tremblant road course a few years back and the town of Trois-Rivieres is well known for its own annual street racing festival.

However, the article mentions that the final decision won’t be made until October…so wouldn’t this mean that this event is actually meant for 2012?

Anyway, what are your thoughts on this potential development? Would you rather see the league try to nail down an event at CGV, Mont-Trembland, or Trois-Rivieres in the future? Or are you willing to see what can be done with this Quebec City bid?
