Will Power leads first practice; Sato uninjured in practice crash

Another weekend, another wrecked car for Takuma Sato and KV Racing Technology.

During tonight’s first practice session for the Indy Japan 300 (Sat., 11 p.m. ET, Versus), Sato lost control of his No. 5 Lotus machine and hit the Turn 1 wall at Twin Ring Motegi with the back end. According to IndyCar.com, Sato has been cleared to drive after the incident, which was caused by an oil line failure.

Sato’s incident extended the session by an extra 15 minutes. Championship leader Will Power topped the charts at over 201 mph in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske entry. He was followed by Penske teammate Helio Castroneves at 200 mph, while Panther’s Dan Wheldon was third-fastest at 199.8 mph.

Another practice session will begin later tonight at 11:30 p.m. ET, followed by qualifying on Saturday morning at 2:30 a.m. ET.
