Will Power has collected his third victory of the 2010 IZOD IndyCar Series championship, besting teammate Ryan Briscoe by 1.2181 seconds to win the Camping World Grand Prix at the Glen. Shortly after a restart with 17 laps remaining in the 60-lap event, Power was able to pass Briscoe down the straightaway leading into Watkins Glen’s bus stop chicane and held the point for the rest of the race.
“I just knew that was my only chance on that restart,” said Power of the winning pass to ABC reporter Vince Welch. “I knew the tires had lot of debris, so I just went for it. I got a good run, used the push-to-pass, and got past [Briscoe]. I’m so happy, man. I wanted to win so bad…I hate getting pole and not winning.”
Prior to Power’s win, no Team Penske driver had won at the Glen despite the team claiming pole for all six IZOD IndyCar Series events at the facility.
Briscoe was able to pass Dario Franchitti in Turn 1 on the final lap of the race, enabling a Penske 1-2. After Franchitti in third, Raphael Matos chalked up a solid fourth-place finish for De Ferran Dragon Racing. KV Racing Technology’s Mario Moraes was fifth. Dan Wheldon, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Scott Dixon, Helio Castroneves and Justin Wilson made up the rest of the top ten.
More to come later tonight/early tomorrow morning…
