Indy overnight ratings up from ’10

Report: ‘500’ also bests Coke 600 overnight numbers as well

One year after notching its worst TV ratings ever, the Indianapolis 500 has appeared to bounce back with a 4.3 overnight rating this year on ABC. While the final ratings won’t come out for a few more days (the overnights only cover the key markets), the 4.3 number was, according to CNBC’s sports business reporter Darren Rovell, enough to top NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 and its own 4.0 overnight rating over on Fox.

According to a release from ESPN public relations, the top five markets for this year’s 500 were Indianapolis (natch), Dayton, Oh., Ft. Myers, Fla., Louisville, Ky., and Nashville, Tenn.

Last year’s Indy had a 4.0 overnight rating and dropped to a 3.6 final rating, the worst number for the race since it went to live television in 1986.
