Power cleared to drive for Toronto

Team Penske driver sustained concussion last weekend at Iowa

Team Penske’s Will Power not only fell out of a tie for the IZOD IndyCar Series championship lead last weekend at Iowa Speedway but also sustained a minor concussion after crashing out in the first half of the Iowa Corn Indy 250. But the Australian has received some good news this week, as he has been cleared to drive by INDYCAR medical staff in the next round at Toronto on July 10.

“It was a hard hit at Iowa, but I didn’t actually get knocked out or anything,” Power said in an INDYCAR press release. “I just had a headache for the first night and some neck soreness. I needed to get checked out by the INDYCAR officials and it was more precautionary than anything, but that’s good, because you can never be too careful.”

Power had to pass the ImPACT test, a 30-minute exam that tests a driver’s reaction time, memory, attention span and other abilities, in order to be cleared to drive. All drivers are required to take it in order to set up baseline data, and then do the test again if/when they sustain a head injury to compare the results to the previously established baseline.

After getting the OK from INDYCAR medical, he tested today with Team Penske teammates Helio Castroneves and Ryan Briscoe at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
